FAQ
Shipping
What countries will you ship to, and how do I get on the waiting list?

We’re currently shipping to countries where we can offer live programming. Right now that’s just in the US. We’ll be set up for the UK in the spring of 2021. We’re taking it step by step (Canada, Japan and EU countries are next!). Updates will be sent through our newsletter. If you want to be added to the waiting list, email
[email protected]
(just drop us a line about which country).

Will my Oda Speakers arrive before the start of the first season?

The first batch will be delivered by the start of the first season in late December. The remaining batches will be sent out after the season begins, in January and early spring.

I want to secure my Oda Speakers now, but I don’t know where I’ll be exactly in December, January, etc.

As long as you’ll be in the US, we will make sure you get your delivery. We’ll confirm your shipping address before we ship out in the winter!

Membership
Do I have to own Oda Speakers in order to buy a seasonal membership?

Yes. Transmissions of our programming will be received only by our speakers. We tuned them specifically to this end, and we are only offering the membership in tandem with our system.

If I receive my Oda Speakers after the season begins, will I be required to pay for the full season?

No. The cost of membership for the first season will be prorated accordingly.

Will my membership allow me to listen to Oda performances anywhere besides the Oda Speakers?

No, performances are broadcast to the speakers only. You will not be able to listen on a phone, computer, or any other device.

Performances
When will the schedule be announced?

The schedule will vary from season to season, but Oda performances will take place intermittently over the course of a season. Some artists might be present throughout, while some might be available for only one night. Artists are also free to do spontaneous performances and secret appearances. Performances will take place throughout the week, with notable happenings taking place on the weekends.

What if I’m not near my speakers when a performance starts?

You won’t be able to hear the performance.

Will performances wake me up if they start after my bedtime?

They don’t have to. Oda has a do-not-disturb mode, which will allow you to silence the speaker during hours when you need things to stay quiet.

Will performances be at different times in different time zones?

No, performances will always be live. That said, we will try to program shows at times that work for as many of our listeners as possible. Starting out, that will mean programming for listeners on the East and West coasts of the United States.

What will Madlib play?

“...whatever the hell I damn well please…”
@madlib

Will there be ads?

Definitely not.

Will performances be archived and available to listen to later?

Oda is live-only. We do not rebroadcast or make recordings of performances available. Artists own the recordings of their performances, and are free to use them however they’d like.

Product
Can I play my own music on the Oda system?

Yup! You can play your own music using a line-in cable, or over bluetooth. That said, our speakers are designed specifically with our performers and content in mind, and may work better with some types of music than others.

How does the Oda system receive performances?

Performances are broadcast over WiFi. You must have a reliable 2.4GHz WiFi network in range of the speaker in order to receive broadcasts.

Is there anything playing in between performances?

In between performances, the speakers will play a continuous live broadcast of audio from somewhere in the world. You can also play your own music, or nothing at all.

What if I want to silence the speaker entirely?

You can silence the speaker by muting it or putting it in local music mode, but incoming performances will still start automatically unless it’s in do-not-disturb mode.

Do I need to download the Oda app?

The app is required during initial setup to connect your speaker to WiFi. Once connected, you won’t need the app nor your phone to listen.

Do the speakers require a WiFi connection?

Yes, performances are broadcast over WiFi. You must have a reliable 2.4GHz WiFi network in range of the speaker in order to receive broadcasts.

Will the Oda Speakers replace my fancy stereo system?

Our speakers are designed to create a strong feeling of presence, and to render voice and instrument in a beautiful, textured, way. They are designed for the music we present but they may not have the same bass response or frequency range of more general-purpose stereo systems.

Can I use my own amp with my Oda system?

No. Plugging your own amp into the speakers could damage them.

Can I use my own speakers with my Oda system?

No. Oda Lighthouse’s output is specially tuned for Oda Speakers, so the sound won't be balanced correctly and you may damage Oda Lighthouse or your speakers.

Additionally, artists use Oda Speakers to monitor and they can shape their sound knowing exactly what you’ll be hearing. We’ve designed these speakers with our performers in mind, and to create the best possible version of our performances.

Can I use my own headphones with my Oda system?

No. Oda Lighthouse’s output is specially tuned for Oda Speakers, so the equalization will be incorrect and you may damage Oda Lighthouse or your speakers.

Additionally, artists use Oda panels to monitor and they can shape their sound knowing exactly what you’ll be hearing. We’ve designed these speakers with our performers in mind, and to create the best possible version of our performances.

Will my Oda system spy on me?

Our speaker doesn’t have a microphone. It won’t respond to voice commands, but at least it can’t spy on you.

How do I play my own music?

To play your own music, first ensure that your Oda system is in line-in mode. The light on top should be white, and you shouldn't hear any live stream playing. Next, connect your device to the line-in input. We recommend turning the volume on your output device all the way up and using Oda's volume knob to control the volume.

How do I prevent live performances from interrupting me?

There are two ways to prevent incoming performances from playing automatically: sleep mode and do-not-disturb mode.

You can put your Oda system in sleep mode by holding the top button down for three seconds. While asleep, the system will not automatically play incoming performances. You can wake the system back up by clicking the top button once (it may take a few seconds to fully wake).

You can also create a do-not-disturb schedule in the app. You'll have to be logged in to your Oda account to do so. If you are logged in, "Do-not-disturb" will show up in the settings menu. Incoming performances will not be played automatically during the times you designate in your do-not-disturb schedule.

How do I make sure my system is ready for live performances?

To automatically play live performances, your Oda system will need to be awake, connected to wifi, and have volume turned up to an audible level. The light on top should be white and not blinking. If it's ready, the performance will play automatically when it begins, without any intervention on your part.

Oda
I’d like to work with and/or partner with you all, who do I get in contact with?

We’d love to hear what you have in mind:
[email protected]

Can’t the speakers be cheaper?

It’s expensive to produce small runs of a custom speaker. We’ve worked hard to get the price down as far as we can while maintaining the beautiful sound we love. We make very little money on the speaker itself, and rely mostly on memberships to pay performers and to support ourselves. We pay meaningful performance fees to give artists an opportunity to create something unique and stretch their creative limits.
